The Safe Haven Story

CONCEIVED OUT OF NEED:

The 14 counties in South West Georgia currently have the 4th highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in Georgia .According to CDC, the State of Georgia has the eighth highest number of reported AIDS cases in the U.S. with Thomasville-Thomas County is particularly hard hit with an alarmingly high number of confirmed cases involving patients under the age of 18. As of January 2004, we have spoken to over 2,000 people at schools, churches, civic clubs, and other organizations in the 8 county area and continue to try to educate the community about HIV/AIDS and let the public know that we are available if needed.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

ULTIMATE GOAL:
To provide a staffed facility where those who have no home can reside and receive support services.

DATE ORGANIZATION FORMED: August 1997

WORK IN PROGRESS: Although still in infancy, Safe Haven volunteers are already making a substantial impact on AIDS/HIV impacted individuals needing clothing, food and transportation to a location where housing could be obtained. As stated above, volunteers have already spoken to over 2000 individuals at schools, churches, and civic groups. Our biggest need presently is for funds to continue providing nutritious foods through our pantry delivery system and funds for seed money for a building to accommodate the 225 people that we currently serve.

RESOURCES: Since Safe Haven is a 501(c)(3) organization, it relies completely on charitable donations and gifts. Safe Haven maintains a Clothes Closet and Food Pantry. A strict policy of confidentiality is maintained at Safe Haven's facility under all circumstances.

COUNSELING: Safe Haven will arrange for counseling for HIV/AIDS affected clients on a case-by-case basis.
